I Have a Secret! Submitted on Sep 17, by MzGee For most of my adult life I identified as a heterosexual woman. After all, I was a girl, right? I was raised with the notion that girls date boys, not other girls. Don’t get me wrong, there are LGBT people in my family, but like all other ingrained stigmas, that was them not me. When I was 13 years old, I told a cousin that I wanted to become a mechanic when I grew up. She immediately said, “if you become a mechanic people are going to call you a ‘bulldagger"”. I didn’t know what the word meant, but I knew it was bad by the look on her face and the way she spit the words out.

Michael Zalnasky From the very start, after my AIDS diagnosis, I exposed my status pretty much world-wide, considering social media and its reach. Imagine, standing naked, alone, fragile, frail, a ghostly-looking man, the walking dead if you will. And so it began. Throughout this journey of mine, lassoing and maintaining a grip in the eyes of stigma has become my passion. I spoke early, often, and loud, almost immediately following my so-called doomsday. What was really exposed to my eyes early on, was how many heterosexual positive people there were, and there, in these groups, they found freedom, and they found release.

Regions of this protein are also crucial for chemokine ligand binding, functional response of the receptor, and HIV co-receptor activity. The tyrosine sulfated amino terminus of this co-receptor is the “essential determinant” of binding to the gp glycoprotein. The V1-V2 stem can influence “co-receptor usage through its peptide composition as well as by the degree of N-linked glycosylation. In individuals infected with HIV, CCR5-using viruses are the predominant species isolated during the early stages of viral infection, suggesting that these viruses may have a selective advantage during transmission or the acute phase of disease.
Moreover, at least half of all infected individuals harbor only CCR5-using viruses throughout the course of infection. CCR5 is the primary co-receptor used by gp sequentially with CD4. This bind results in gp41, the other protein product of gp , to be released from its metastable conformation and insert itself into the membrane of the host cell. Although it hasn’t been finalized as a proven theory yet, binding of gp CCR5 involves two crucial steps: Maraviroc was approved for use by the FDA in August It is possible that under selective pressure HIV will evolve to use another co-receptor.
